	Gondolas, hopper cars, box cars, reefers were the next attempt, of which I have now all told eight cards with a crummy. Not being satisfied with the conventional straight railroad which ran around on benches, I included in my plans mountains, grades, bridges and culverts, with the result that I now have completed three mountains, three tunnels, a cut through a ledge and about 220 ft. of completed track, rock ballasted, with electric switches and whatnot. Here [[George Thomas]], Percy Pierce and many others showed up for the movies which I had taken in the West of the California live steamers and a fine chat once again on the success of [[The Miniature Locomotive]] magazine. We found that each and every Pennsylvania live steamer was willing to ~~ake~~ it upon himself to be a go-getter for subscriptions to [[The Miniature Locomotive]]. We found the club track in [[Ken Souser]]'s orchard in very fine shape. It is really a fine piece of workmanship and something the P.L.S. can be proud of. It is now in three gauges, 2-1/2 inch, 3-17/32 inch and 4-3/4 inch. They like to have visitors come to their meetings and bring their engines so have this in mind when traveling through this area. Really, a steam engine does not belong on an <i>inside</i> road, because of its fie hazards. Twice I had "#954" spill over on me, drenching the tracks with alcohol, which--of course--called fro a lot of quick action! In 1940 Mrs. Friend conceived the idea that we should visit some of our fast-growing <i>live-steam</i> friends, which called for packing up "Livvie" with all her kit and starting off for Denver. [[Arthur Wegner]], one of the "live wires" of Denver, and the originator of the [[Rocky Mountain Live Steamers]], was there to greet us. We operated about seven hours, with son Joe checking up on all of the various engineers or alleged engineers, to be sure they had water above the ground sheet. All told, thirty or thirty-five men operated "Livvie" while she was in Denver. The same thing happened in [[Los Angeles Live Steamers\|Los Angeles]] where Kyle Testerman and Eddie Sargent greeted "Livvie" with open arms. She had a little difficulty at first on the 26 foot radius loop, which was then in operation in Los Angeles, but after we knocked out the outside rail an eighth of an inch, she put in another afternoon and evening performing for her many new friends.

	The next "live steam" stop was at [[Victor Shattock]]'s place in Oakland, Cal., where "Livvie" couldn't steam up as they had no track. However, Vic put on a very fine show with one of the best 1/2 inch steam set-ups I've ever seen.
