Ralph Tucker wrote the following which appeared in Modeltec, May 1984:
- Austin surprised everyone at the Florida Live Steam Meet in February when he announced his intention to retire as IBLS Mid-West Secretary. He had asked me earlier in the day if I would be willing to take over as Secretary and I was honored to be asked and felt it will be a privilege to represent the Brotherhood.
- A little background on myself: I was introduced to The Hobby by way of an invitation to accompany a Live Steamer to a Los Angeles Live Steamers' Meet. It was "love at first sight," and I have been involved in The Hobby ever since.
- I've had a 1 inch scale Little Engines Atlantic (4-4-2) and a 1-1/2 inch scale Winton Mogul (2-6-0). I've also built a 1-1/2 inch scale box-cab diesel and Fairmont Motor Car. As a member of the Illinois Live Steamers, I have served as Secretary and Editor of Stacks & Tracks. Presently I am editing and publishing a newsletter, The Midwest Interchange.
- It's only through the interchange of ideas and information that the Live Steam Hobby can grow. It's to that end I hope to be able to promote better communications between the clubs and members of the Brotherhood. I plan to continue my practice of attending several different club meets every year, as I really enjoy meeting and talking with Live Steamers, seeing their equipment and track sites.
The Midwest Region covered the following states:
- Alabama
- Arkansas
- Colorado
- Illinois
- Indiana
- Iowa
- Kansas
- Kentucky
- Louisiana
- Michigan
- Minnesota
- Mississippi
- Missouri
- Nebraska
- New Mexico
